"The Heart of Austerlitz."
Austerlitz artwork public space Marjan Laaper

Marjan Laaper designed an artwork for the renovated village house in the center of Austerlitz, municipality of Zeist. The artwork is designed for the meeting place in the village house: "Heart of Austerlitz", which is located on a corner.

The foyer / meeting space of the building is in exactly the same corner and is characterized by a high, open loft. This space behind the glass facade in the ridge of the building is clearly visible from the village square. The old village house is a building for the entire community of Austerlitz.

The village house has a connecting function. Many different community clubs find their home there. The building serves as the heart of the community, which gives new impulses to the personal lives of the residents and strengthens the community.

The heart is the central organ of the human body. The artwork "Heart of Austerlitz" visualizes the function of the village house as the central organ that revitalizes, renews and nourishes the Austerlitz community.

The work is situated on the triangular back wall of the space. The work shows a luminous ornament on the plaster back wall. The ornament visualizes the human circulatory system. On the right wall, above the wooden cross construction in the building, a glowing heart can be seen. The heart glows and slowly changes color and light intensity.

The glowing light from the heart is transmitted through the "veins" to the "capillaries" in the form of the text: Dorpshuis ( Village House).

From the letters; “Dorpshuis” the light spreads to the text: “Austerlitz”. It is an ongoing process of glowing, lighting and changing. It is a circulating system that is interconnected, needs and feeds each other. It also functions as a light beacon in the environment that changes the space of atmosphere, color, light and intensity.

Just as the human heart is enclosed in the body, so the Austerlitz Heart is visually enclosed in the building. Due to its location on the back wall of the room, the ornament is visually enclosed by the walls and construction beams.

The system is almost never visible completely because it is embedded in architecture. Each time, part of the work will seduce the viewer to look at the work from a different position. It is a work that has to be discovered and reveals a different part of the whole from several points of view. Sometimes only the heart is visible or the texts Dorpshuis and Austerlitz and sometimes you see that it is a connected system.

In the evening, the light from the heart will act as a beacon of light, where you can orient yourself from the village square.

Because the work is integrated into the architecture, the space will also become part of the experience of the artwork. The heart symbolizes all kinds of human feelings; feelings of pride, togetherness, solidarity, willfulness and of course feelings of love. The design for the artwork thus refers to Austerlitz's identity. The work has its own meaning both in the context of the building and in the perception from the wider environment. The design also functions as a new symbol of the community house.
